Learn to Knit
City Knits has four introductory projects specially developed by Karen to teach new knitters the most skills in the least time.   After completing these projects you will be able to tackle almost any project!  Initially you will learn to cast on, knit, purl and cast off as you create a sampler scarf.

The other projects are a simple seamed hat, rolled brim hat and learn to cable scarf. These projects include various cast-ons, increases and decreases, invisible seams, eye cord, buttonholes, cabling, seed stitch and slipped stitch edges. Aggressive Beginners can even start their first sweater that will knit all these new skills together. Your pace is set by you and the amount of homework you do.  Each knitter is different and our instructor will give you individualized attention with your progress.  Students may repeat this beginner series. Ambidextrous Knitting
Instructor - Shelly
Sunday - Feb. 17
1-3 p.m.
Tuition: $18

Are you a rightie? Leftie? Picker or thrower? Continental, English, or American?  Whichever hand you learned to knit with, there are times you’ve probably envied the “other way”. There are advantages to being able to knit with either hand. Come build some more neural connections in your brain by learning to knit and purl with your opposite hand.

Pre-class homework:  On a 16” circular needle, size 8 or 9, cast on 40 stitches with a light colored worsted weight practice yarn. Join without twisting and knit 3 rounds.  Bring to class.

Fabulous Fair Isle Techniques
Instructor - Shelly
Sunday - February 24
1-4 p.m.
Tuition: $24

The fantastic color work typical of Fair Isle knitting can be intimidating to the novice knitter. We can help you “unravel” the complicated look of these patterns. You’ll learn both stranded and woven techniques for carrying your yarns, working in the round, and reading color charts and patterns. We will also discuss the differences in working your colors with only one hand, or with both at once! After a bit of practice, we will cast on for a warm winter headband or hat (pattern included).

Materials needed for class:  16” size 7 circular needle, stitch markers and 2 contrasting colors of Karabella Aurora 8 (one ball of each)

The Mysteries of Blocking
Instructor - Shelly
Sunday - March 9
1-2:30 p.m.
Tuition: $15

As part of the finishing on a project, you should consider the varieties of ways to “block” or shape your knitted fabric. The techniques will vary from fabric to fabric, or yarn to yarn. Even the desired result will affect how you block your piece.  Using the wrong way can irreparably damage all your hard work.  Come learn by watching and doing with the pre-knitted swatches in this informative workshop.

Louisa Harding Fair Isle Sweater
Instructor – Shelly
Sundays - March 9, 16 and April 6
2:30-4:30 p.m.
Tuition - $45

Try your hand at using Fair Isle techniques for knitting this Louisa Harding design. The bands of color at the waist and wrists will highlight your sweater without overwhelming you with color work, and the Aurora 8 yarn will feel wonderfully stretchy without the excess bulk of a traditional Fair Isle sweater.  We will be modifying the pattern slightly to enable us to knit the body in the round up to the armhole shaping, as well as the sleeves. We recommend taking the Fabulous Fair Isle Techniques workshop prior to this project.

Materials needed:
Karabella Aurora 8 – worsted weight
Modern Classics by Louisa Harding (class book)
Sizes 5 and 7 - 24” circular needles to knit body of sweater
Sizes 5 and 7 - dpn for sleeves or 1 - 40” circular for the magic loop technique
