HOLIDAY WARMTH: Knitter does fuzzy version of stamps

When the U.S. Postal Service contacted Karen Kendrick-Hands recently to see if she could knit a supersized likeness of this year's holiday stamps, she was more than willing.

"It was easy to say yes -- I'd already started one," said the owner of City Knits in Detroit.

The Holiday Knits series of stamps, now available at post offices nationwide, appear as knittings of a Christmas tree, snowman, teddy bear and reindeer. Kendrick-Hands designed and created a 42-inch-by-64-inch afghan likeness, which was publicly unveiled downtown Tuesday evening.

Kendrick-Hands hopes the afghan will spur others to knit holiday gift items for donation to children and their parents at the Henry Ford Hospital Kaleidoscope Kids Hospice.
